The Kilbrittain Whale is a unique community heritage initiative centred around the preserved skeleton of a 19-metre fin whale that beached in West Cork in 2009.
I was tasked with transforming this remarkable story into a clear, cohesive identity — one that honours the whale’s legacy while supporting local engagement, education, and donations.
My work included logo and branding design, full website creation, and setting up a donation system to support ongoing maintenance and development.
The branding balances respect for nature with the warmth of local involvement. The custom whale symbol is fluid and organic, drawing inspiration from the skeleton’s form and the Atlantic coastline.
I have chosen deep blues and clean aquas to represent the marine environment, paired with a brighter accent to reflect the community’s energy and optimism.
Typography choices prioritised clarity, with a focus on legibility for all ages.
The website was designed as both an archive and a living platform. It tells the full story — from beaching to community recovery, and from scientific study to educational legacy — through strong visual structure, galleries, and accessible language.
Navigation is mobile-first and intuitive, while each section invites curiosity and engagement, whether you’re visiting in person or discovering the project from afar.
Beyond design, the platform was built with long-term use in mind. School visits, photo submissions, whale spotting, and media coverage are all integrated into the experience.
The system allows the team to grow at their own pace, with donation management, content updates, and outreach tools already in place — ready to support the next chapter of this extraordinary story.
We implemented a seamless donation experience, allowing visitors to quickly support the project with a default €2 donation or a custom amount. No complicated forms, no barriers — just a direct, secure way to give.
Confirmation messages and thank-you content were crafted to reflect the sincerity and personal nature of the project.
