If your desktop is a digital junk drawer and your “Documents” folder makes you anxious, it’s time to fix that. A good folder structure isn’t just tidy — it saves time, reduces stress, and gives you peace of mind when you need to find something quickly.

But here’s something often overlooked:
The best system is the one that works with your brain, not against it.

Some people love deeply nested folders, strict naming rules, and order within order. Others? They just need it to feel simple and not overwhelming. I’ve tested both — and trust me, something that makes perfect sense to me might seem like complete nonsense to someone else.

That’s why this basic structure below is meant to work for most people — especially those who don’t want to overthink it but still want to feel in control.

📁 Personal Documents

A top-level folder for everything related to your life — not work or business.

Break it down into:

🪪 ID & Certificates
Passport scans, birth certs, driving licence, diplomas.

📄 Legal & Contracts
Rental agreements, insurance policies, legal letters.

💰 Finance
Bank statements, loan documents, tax files, invoices.

🏥 Health
Medical reports, prescriptions, vaccination records.

🏠 Property & Bills
Utility bills, mortgage papers, lease documents.

🎓 Education
Course materials, transcripts, certificates.

🗂 Archive
For older files you might rarely use but still want to keep. Create folders like 2010–2019.

🧠 A Note on Mental Styles

If you’re a neurodivergent thinker (slightly dyslexic, ADHD, or just wired differently), a traditional folder system might feel like a trap rather than a tool. You might do better with:

Fewer folders.

Shallower structure (1–2 levels max).

Big categories like “Important Stuff”, “Health”, “Kids”, “House”, and that’s it.

The key is to see it and get it instantly. No decoding required. I’m still refining a great system for this type of mind — but the structure above could be a helpful starting point for any super-dad, super-mom, or household CEO managing daily life.
